Why your charge is higher than the sticker price
Customs doesn’t tax only the item price — it works off the customs value, which includes your shipping cost. Import VAT of 16.5% is charged on that value, and customs duty (if any) is added on top depending on the type of goods. That’s why a N$2,400 order can land higher than you expect — and why knowing the number before you buy lets you price and plan properly.
Common questions
Does NamPost share my VAT?
No. NamRA collects import VAT (16.5% of the customs value) and any customs duty. NamPost or your courier may charge a separate handling or clearance fee for the service of clearing and delivering your parcel — that is not a tax and is not shared with NamRA.
Is it really 61% on everything?
No — that is a myth. There is no single flat rate. Import VAT is 16.5% of the customs value, and customs duty depends entirely on what the item is, its material, value and country of origin. Some goods (like many phones and laptops) carry no duty at all; clothing tends to be higher.
Do I pay duty on goods from South Africa?
No customs duty — Namibia and South Africa are in the same customs union (SACU), so goods moving between them don't attract customs duty. Import VAT can still apply.
